Leonard Mlodinow was born in Chicago, Illinois, received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of California at Berkeley, and is the author of five best-sellers. In addition to his books and research articles, основываясь на этих данных has taught at Caltech, written for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and Forbes magazine, among other publications, and for television series such as McGyver and Star Trek: the Next Generation.

Enhance euclids window the story of geometry from parallel lines to hyperspace download free purchase. Through Euvlids Window Leonard Mlodinow brilliantly and delightfully leads us on a journey through five revolutions in geometry, from the Greek concept hpyerspace parallel lines to the latest notions of hyperspace. Here is an altogether new, refreshing, alternative history of math revealing how simple questions anyone might ask about space — in the living room or in some other galaxy — have euclid the hidden engine of the highest achievements in science and technology.

Based on Mlodinow’s extensive historical euclids window the story of geometry from parallel lines to hyperspace download free his studies alongside colleagues such as Richard Feynman and Kip Thorne; and interviews with leading physicists and mathematicians such as Murray Gell-Mann, Edward Witten, and Brian Greene, Euclid’s Window is an extraordinary euclids window the story of geometry from parallel lines to hyperspace download free of rigorous, authoritative investigation and accessible, good-humored storytelling that makes a stunningly original argument asserting the primacy of geometry.

For those who have looked through Euclid’s Window, no space, no thing, and no time will ever be quite the same. Previous page. Print length. Publication date. See all взято отсюда. Next page. Frequently bought together. Total price:.

Brian Greene author of The Elegant Universe There is perhaps no better way to prepare for the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow than to learn the language of geometry, and Euclid’s Window makes this task lively and enjoyable.

Leonard Mlodinow, Ph. He has also developed many bestselling and award-winning educational CD-ROMs, and delivered technical and general lectures in ten countries. He lives in New York City. All rights reserved. Chapter One: The First Revolution Euclid was a man who possibly did not discover even one significant law of geometry. Yet he is the most famous geometer ever known and for good reason: for millennia it has been his window that people first look through when they view geometry.

Here смотрите подробнее now, he is our poster boy for the first great revolution in the concept of space — the birth of abstraction, and the idea of proof. The concept of space began, naturally enough, as a concept of place, our place, earth.

It began with a development the Egyptians and Babylonians called “earth measurement. The Greeks were the stor to realize that nature could be understood employing mathematics — that geometry could be applied to reveal, not merely to describe. Evolving geometry from simple descriptions of stone and sand, the Greeks extracted the sstory of point, line, and plane.

Stripping away the window-dressing of matter, they uncovered a structure possessing a beauty civilization had never before seen. At the climax of this struggle to invent mathematics stands Euclid. The story of Euclid is a story of revolution. It is the story of the axiom, the theorem, the proof, the story of the birth of reason itself. Read more. This is a history of the development of geometric thought. It shows how Gauss’s realization eucclids Euclid’s model of space was only one possible windiw and how that insight changed mathematics and then physics.

Einstein couldn’t have explained relativity if Reimann hadn’t already created an appropriate geometry for extratresteral space. I wish there were a few more illustrations, but that’s a nit. The author, Mlodinow, was trained as a mathematician and then evolved into a Hollywood writer Startrek, etc and this shows in his lively writing style.

A very good read for someone who want’s to know about the role of modern geomentry in today’s intellectual world. No real math background is required to read this book — its history book, not mathematics text.

The author’s writing style reminds me of a recipe blog. If you have ever gone looking for a recipe online you know what I mean. A wall of text about подробнее на этой странице this is their favorite recipe and how it was passed on by their great great grandma. Scroll down for about 5 minutes and you finally find a good recipe. That’s what this book is like. There is so much background information, most of which doesn’t really matter when it comes to Euclidian and Non-Euclidian geometry.

Several avg antivirus full version 2015 free didn’t even mention geometry once. Ruclids narrative jumps all over the place which can cause some confusion in chronology. And on a personal note, I think the author has some been against Christianity. The way he phrases his sentences whenever Christianity gets brought up seems unnecisarily hostile on more than one occasion.

As someone who takes his faith as seriously as his math, this was irritating. I guess all these great euclids window the story of geometry from parallel lines to hyperspace download free are coming from a lack of better writings on the subject but that is just a guess. If you want a solid, chronological history of geometry, look else where. If you are Christian then this book might erk you.

Favorite quote: ” I’ve read several other books from Mlodinow. This is by far the most difficult one. In the beginning, it was not that hard to understand. But, it gets very difficult to grasp, as the subject changes from basic geometric concepts to the very complex theories of moder physics.

By the way, it is a history book, not a text book of mathematics or physics. Indeed, I think mathematicians ans physicists will find this book to shallow, while the rest – like me – will find it difficult. This is the reason patallel giving three stars. But, at the end, it is a good book. In my opinion, it worths reading it. This is a нажмите чтобы увидеть больше good адрес страницы, much better than I expected.

I gepmetry it would be more like a college mathematics text book. Instead it is more like a novel. It is very readable and the subjects flow smoothly from one to another.

I found the reading нажмите чтобы узнать больше and it kept my interest from one chapter to the next. Most of it is not too technical or abstract so it should be understandable to the general public.
