— E-cigarettes may be a boon for the tobacco and tobacco industry, but they are also a boon in the eyes of the tobacco company that manufactures them.
Eighty-seven percent of the American population has smoked cigarettes at least once in their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More than 80 percent of those who do smoke have used e-cigs to quit smoking.
But e-cigarette companies are now working on a new line of products that could dramatically reduce smoking rates.
Tulsa-based Vaporizer Technologies Inc. says it is the world’s first maker of e-liquids that use nicotine, not carbonated water.
The company says it started selling e-cig liquids in October and will begin rolling them out nationwide next year.
Vaporizer Technologies is also the first company to offer nicotine-free cartridges, a feature that has become an industry standard.
With the new line, Vaporizer says it has added two new flavors, an original taste that is reminiscent of a candy bar and an e-liquid that tastes like liquid chocolate.
“We are trying to change the conversation about tobacco,” said Mike Koster, chief executive of Vaporizer.
“We are going to make it as difficult as possible for people to smoke tobacco.”
Vaporizer is a subsidiary of Reynolds American, a maker of cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco.
Koster said he hopes the new flavors will help convince smokers that e-juices are a healthier alternative to smoking.
The company said it also is introducing e-waste, a new way to recycle e-vaporizers.
It also is adding a battery to the vaporizer that can store up to 300 hours of battery charge.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 4 American adults is addicted to cigarettes.
